Can Dogs Eat Grapes or Raisins? No. Here's Why, and What to Do
No. Grapes, raisins (kishmish), sultanas and currants can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs, and there is no known safe amount. Some dogs get very ill after eating only a few. If your dog has eaten any, call a vet straight away, even if your dog seems completely fine. Treatment started early gives the best chance of a full recovery.

Why grapes and raisins are dangerous
Grapes and raisins can damage a dog's kidneys within a day or two. For years the cause was unknown. In 2021, researchers working with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center identified tartaric acid, which grapes contain naturally, as the likely culprit. Dogs appear to be far more sensitive to it than people are.
The amount of tartaric acid varies between grapes, and dogs vary in how they react, so there is no amount that is known to be safe. Raisins are dried and concentrated, so gram for gram they can be more dangerous than fresh grapes.
What to do if your dog ate grapes or raisins
Act quickly, even if your dog seems fine. Kidney damage can start before any symptoms show.
- Note what your dog ate, roughly how much, and when.
- Call your vet or the nearest emergency animal hospital immediately. Do not wait for symptoms.
- Do not try to make your dog vomit at home unless a vet tells you to and explains how. Home methods such as salt water can be dangerous.
- Take the packaging or a sample of the food with you if it is a mixed item, such as a cake or sweet.
If your dog ate them recently, the vet may make your dog vomit safely and give activated charcoal to reduce absorption. Many dogs are then given intravenous fluids for about two days, with blood tests to check kidney function.

Most cases are not a bunch of grapes. They are raisins inside food that gets shared or dropped.
- Kheer, halwa, sheera, payasam and other sweets made with kishmish
- Pulao, biryani and other rice dishes garnished with raisins
- Fruit cake, raisin bread, buns and cookies
- Dry fruit and trail mixes, muesli and granola
- Grape juice, jams and jellies
Vets also advise keeping tamarind (imli) and cream of tartar away from dogs, because they contain the same acid.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting is often the first sign and can start within a few hours. It may be followed by diarrhoea, loss of appetite, weakness, tiredness and belly pain. As the kidneys are affected, usually over the next one to three days, a dog may drink and urinate less, or stop urinating altogether. By then the damage is harder to treat, which is why vets want to see dogs before symptoms start.
Safer fruit treats for dogs
Many fruits are fine as an occasional small treat. Remove seeds, stones, cores and skins, and offer only a few pieces.
